Test Your Fruit and Veggie IQ!

Test Your Fruit and Veggie IQ!

By Joe Wilkes

Fruits and Vegetables on a ScaleTrue or False?

  1. False: Apples are the most popular fruit in America. Bananas have apples beat hands down. Americans consume about 33 pounds of bananas a year per person. Which is not a bad thing, as they contain high amounts of vitamin C, fiber, and potassium.
  2. True: The artichoke is a member of the sunflower family. Artichokes and sunflowers are both members of the thistle family. The artichoke is native to the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. Its Latin name, Cynara scolymus, comes from a legend of a young girl, Cynara, discovered by the god Zeus, who in typical fashion, seduced her; moved her into a Mt. Olympus-adjacent home (for easy cheating access when his wife was out of town); and when, homesick, she snuck back to Earth, turned her into what we now call an artichoke in a fit of rage. Zeus could be a real jerk.
  3. False: Ladyfingers is another name for Jerusalem artichokes. Actually, it is a slang term for the humble okra. A staple in African cuisine, it is rarely eaten in America except in Cajun and Creole cuisine. It is the okra that gives gumbo its unique gelatinous texture. It is high in fiber and has lots of vitamins.
  4. True: In ancient Greece, if a man threw an apple at a woman, it meant he wanted to marry her. Today, the prospective groom would just be booked for assault. But back in the day, you could throw assorted produce at a woman and it meant all kinds of good things. In other apple history, the ancient unmarried Celts started the practice of bobbing for apples. The superstition was that whoever got the first apple would be the next to be married.
  5. False: Mel Blanc, the voice of Bugs Bunny, was allergic to carrots. An urban myth has long circulated that he was allergic, but in fact he just didn't like them. He tried eating other vegetables like celery, when voicing the cartoon hare, but nothing had that distinctive carrot-y crunch. So he would eat the carrot, say Bugs' line, then spit the carrot in the garbage while they stopped tape.

Black Bean Brownies

Robert just made this recipe and the boys love them!!! If it passes the "kid" test, then you know they are yummy!!

Black Bean Brownies

BrowniesBasically, instead of adding eggs and oil to the mix as directed on the box, you food-process a can of black beans (unseasoned, of course) and 1/4 cup of water. Add the mix and bake according to the directions on the box, and voilĂ ! You have delicious chewy brownies—now with more fiber than fat.

  • 1 15-oz. can unseasoned black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 package brownie mix (12 to 14 oz.—we recommend a healthy one with whole-grain ingredients)

Puree beans and water in food processor or blender. Add beans to brownie mix, and bake according to package instructions. Do not add any other ingredients. Serves 16.

Preparation time: 10 minutes, plus baking time

Let's Welcome 2010 with open arms!!!

Well I can't believe it is Jan. 4th already. I have to say that I am pretending today is Jan. 1st. My kids are back to school and now I will set my new routine into "GO" mode. Tony Horton is a good friend of mine and I read his blog this morning and found what he had to say about New Year's Resolutions to be spot on. I wanted to share it with you. If you need some accountability, advice, tips, to get an extra boost in your fitness, I'm here for you. Happy New Year!!!

Day 1 by Tony Horton
Day 1 Here it is... 2010. Now what? New year, new decade and new opportunities. Everyone knows by now that the start of a new year creates the desire to be a better person. Smoking, drinking, bad eating habits, procrastinating, better work habits, spend less, save more, get fit, lose weight, and so it goes. Enthusiasm that will last well into April. Turns out that long term change is really hard and falling into old habits can happen with very little pressure from the outside world. Turns out that success comes to those with good mentors, a rock solid plan that fits your lifestyle, a means to stay accountable, and surrounding yourself with like-minded people. Many many folks with the best of intentions have been winging it year after year with little or no change. I meet far too many people who have fallen off the wagon. They were on the program but something happened and before you know it 3 or 4 weeks went by and 10 to 15 pounds come back and they're right back where they were. Sound familiar? 1. Follow the person and/or program that makes sense to you. 2. Write down a plan that forces you to stick with your goals for the next 12 months. 3. Finds 3 ways to stay accountable even under the most adverse conditions 4. Run from lazy naysayers and find people who want more out of life. Do It ~ Bring It!
